Bocce League Player Rating System
|
|
|
Over time, a rating
system for bocce league players has been developed. The rating
system is an important part of the leagues because it is the basis
for forming balanced teams, determines the team captains, and is the
basis for a substitution list of equivalent players.
This
page describes how the system works and provides the ratings for the league players. |
|
|
|
The rating system has the 4 descriptive categories below: |
|
LEVEL 1 - Displays
a high level of skill in playing the game. Uses a variety of shots
(pointing, banking, hitting) at logical times. Consistently uses
strategy in playing the game and planning shots. Very knowledgeable
of the rules and how the game is played. |
|
LEVEL 2 - Pretty
consistent in rolling straight and being close to the pallina. Needs
improvement in strategy and/or shot variety. |
|
LEVEL 3 - Average
player. Rolls straight balls more often than not. Somewhat
inconsistent in scoring points and uses very little strategy. |
|
LEVEL 4 - Scores
points once in a while. Inconsistent in throwing the ball. |
|
|
|
At the end of the season
while individual playing skills are fresh in their mind, all the
team captains must rate all the players on their team, captains in
their league, and any other
captains or players they feel capable of rating. Captains do not
rate themselves. Ratings are based purely on
bocce skills. They use the following process:
-
Each player is given
the rating for the category above that best describes their skill
level, i.e., 1, 2, 3, or 4.
-
Then within each category,
the captains separate skill levels within the category by adding
0.0 for the best player(s) up to 0.9 for lower player(s). A
captain's ratings for example for Level 2 might be 2.0, 2.1, 2.2,
2.5, 2.5, 2.5, 2.8, up to 2.9.
-
The rating form is
submitted to the committee.
|
|
Each captain's ratings are entered into a
spreadsheet. The ratings by the captain for the players on their
team are given double weight (C1 & C2 if a person is in 2 leagues). All the ratings for a player are then averaged
and the average rating becomes that player's rating for the next
season and are used to form teams and the substitute list. The rating is checked to see if someone's rating of a player
is not typical and is affecting the rating too much. The maximum
rating and the minimum rating is compared to the average rating. If
any difference is a full rating level (1.0) from the average, the
rating entry is reviewed and may be removed if it is the only rating
at that value. |

2012 LCC BOCCE LEAGUES RATING
LIST |
|
The current Rating List for league players was
created as described above by last season's team captains. The
ratings are shown below in the above descriptive rating levels of
1, 2, 3, or 4. The fractional part of the averages are only
used by the computer to separate players to form the league teams
and substitute list. Those in each level meet the basic level
description but note that each level may contain a range of players,
some who are closer to
the level above and some that are closer to the level below. |
